The present study deals with detailed hydrochemical assessment of groundwater within the Saq aquifer. The Saq aquifer which extends through the NW part of Saudi Arabia is one of the major sources of groundwater supply. Groundwater samples were collected from about 295 groundwater wells and analyzed for various physico-chemical parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, CO3 ?, HCO3 ?, Cl?, SO4 2?, and NO3 ?. Groundwater in the area is slightly alkaline and hard in nature. Electrical conductivity (EC) varies between 284 and 9,902?μS/cm with an average value of 1,599.4 μS/cm. The groundwater is highly mineralized with approximately 30 % of the samples having major ion concentrations above the WHO permissible limits. The NO3 ? concentration varies between 0.4 and 318.2 mg/l. The depth distribution of NO3 ? concentration shows higher concentration at shallow depths with a gradual decrease at deeper depths. As far as drinking water quality criteria are concerned, study shows that about 33 % of samples are unfit for use. A detailed assessment of groundwater quality in relation to agriculture use reveals that 21 % samples are unsuitable for irrigation. Using Piper’s classification, groundwater was classified into five different groups. Majority of the samples show Mix-Cl-SO4- and Na-Cl-types water. The abundances of Ca2+ and Mg2+ over alkalis infer mixed type of groundwater facies and reverse exchange reactions. The groundwater has acquired unique chemical characteristics through prolonged rock-water interactions, percolation of irrigation return water, and reactions at vadose zone. 相似文献

The 7.6 magnitude (Richter scale) earthquake that struck northern Pakistan on 8 October 2005 was devastating. This paper gauges success in targeting vulnerable families during the transition from relief to reconstruction through cash assistance provided by the Livelihood Support Cash Grants (LSCG) programme. Families without a male member, with a disabled male member aged between 18 and 60 years or with more than five children, defined as vulnerable, were provided with USD 50 per month for six months via a bank transfer. The LSCG scheme enrolled around 750,000 families and selected 267,402 vulnerable families to whom it disbursed a total of USD 86.95 million. Using a community‐based survey, this paper assesses leakage and under‐coverage (exclusion). Approximately 30 per cent of families received the cash grant. However, only one in two was eligible for the benefit, and one in two deserving families was excluded. This is a matter of grave concern. 相似文献

Effect of metal tolerant plant growth promoting Bradyrhizobium sp. (vigna) on growth, symbiosis, seed yield and metal uptake by greengram plants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The nickel and zinc tolerant plant growth promoting Bradyrhizobium sp. (vigna) RM8 was isolated from nodules of greengram, grown in metal contaminated Indian soils. The plant growth promoting (PGP) potentials of strain RM8 was assessed both in the presence and absence of nickel and zinc under in vitro conditions. Strain RM8 tolerated a high level of nickel (300 microg ml(-1)) and zinc (1400 microg ml(-1)) on yeast extract mannitol agar medium. Bradyrhizobium sp. (vigna) strain RM8 produced 13.3 microg ml(-1) of indole acetic acid in Luria Bertani broth at 100 microg ml(-1) of tryptophan which increased to 13.6 microg ml(-1) at 50 microg Ni ml(-1) and 13.5 microg ml(-1) at 300 microg Zn ml(-1). Strain RM8 was positive for siderophore, HCN and ammonia both in the absence and presence of nickel and zinc. The PGP activity of this strain was further evaluated with increasing concentrations of nickel and zinc using greengram as a test crop. The bioinoculant enhanced the nodule numbers by 82%, leghaemoglobin by 120%, seed yield by 34%, grain protein by 13%, root N by 41% and shoot N by 37% at 290 mg Ni kg(-1) soil. At 4890 mg Zn kg(-1) soil, the bioinoculant increased the nodule numbers by 50%, leghaemoglobin by 100%, seed yield by 36%, grain protein by 13%, root N by 47% and shoot N by 42%. The bioinoculant strain RM8 reduced the uptake of nickel and zinc by plant organs compared to plants grown in the absence of bioinoculant. This study suggested that the bioinoculant due to its intrinsic abilities of growth promotion and attenuation of the toxic effects of nickel and zinc could be exploited for remediation of metal from nickel and zinc contaminated sites. 相似文献

The global demand of bioplastics has lead to an exponential increase in their production commercially. Hence, biodegradable nature needs to be evaluated in various ecosystems viz. air, water, soil and other environmental conditions to avoid the polymeric waste accumulation in the nature. In this paper, we investigated the progressive response of two indigenously developed bacterial consortia, i.e., consortium-I (C-I: Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb10, Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb11 and Bacillus sp. strain Rb18), and consortium-II (C-II: Lysinibacillus sp. strain Rb1, Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb13 and Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb19), against biodegradation behavior of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) film composites, under natural soil ecosystem (in net house). The biodegraded films recovered after 6 and 9 months of incubation were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy to determine the variations in chemical and morphological parameters (before and after incubation). Noticeable changes in the bond intensity, surface morphology and conductivity were found when PHB composites were treated with C-II. These changes were drastic in case of blends in comparison to copolymer. The potential isolates not only survived, but, also, there was a significant increase in bacterial diversity during whole period of incubation. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report which described the biodegradation potential of Lysinibacillus sp. as a part of C-II with Pseudomonas sp. against PHB film composites. 相似文献

Freshwater resources are increasingly scarce due to human activities, and the understanding of water quality variations at different spatial and temporal scales is necessary for adequate management. Here, we analyze the hypotheses that (1) the presence of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and (2) a polluted tributary that drains downstream from the WWTP change the spatial patterns of physicochemical variables (pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity) and nutrient concentrations (reactive soluble phosphorus, total phosphorus, nitrogen series, total nitrogen, and total dissolved carbon) along a mid-order river in SE Brazil and that these effects depend on rainfall regime. Six study sites were sampled along almost 4 years to evaluate the impacts of human activities, including sites upstream (1–3) and downstream (5–6) from the WWTP. The impacts were observed presenting an increasing trend from the source (site 1) towards Água Quente stream (site 4, the polluted tributary), with signs of attenuation at site 5 (downstream from both WWTP and site 4) and the river mouth (site 6). Input of nutrients by rural and urban runoff was observed mainly at sites 2 and 3, respectively. At sites 4 and 5, the inputs of both untreated and treated wastewaters increased nutrient concentrations and changed physicochemical variables, with significant impacts to Monjolinho River. Seasonal variations in the measured values were also observed, in agreement with the pluviometric indexes of the region. Univariate analyses suggested no effect of the WWTP for most variables, with continued impacts at sites downstream, but non-parametric multivariate analysis indicated that these sites were recovering to chemical characteristics similar to upstream sites, apparently due to autodepuration. Therefore, multivariate methods that allow rigorous tests of multifactor hypotheses can greatly contribute to determine effects of both point and non-point sources in river systems, thus contributing to freshwater monitoring and management. 相似文献

Role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in the remediation of metal contaminated soils 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Pollution of the biosphere by the toxic metals is a global threat that has accelerated dramatically since the beginning of
industrial revolution. The primary source of this pollution includes the industrial operations such as mining, smelting, metal
forging, combustion of fossil fuels and sewage sludge application in agronomic practices. The metals released from these sources
accumulate in soil and in turn, adversely affect the microbial population density and physico-chemical properties of soils,
leading to the loss of soil fertility and yield of crops. The heavy metals in general cannot be biologically degraded to more
or less toxic products and hence, persist in the environment. Conventional methods used for metal detoxification produce large
quantities of toxic products and are cost-effective. The advent of bioremediation technology has provided an alternative to
conventional methods for remediating the metal-poisoned soils. In metal-contaminated soils, the natural role of metal-tolerant
plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in maintaining soil fertility is more important than in conventional agriculture, where
greater use of agrochemicals minimize their significance. Besides their role in metal detoxification/removal, rhizobacteria
also promote the growth of plants by other mechanisms such as production of growth promoting substances and siderophores.
Phytoremediation is another emerging low-cost in situ technology employed to remove pollutants from the contaminated soils.
The efficiency of phytoremediation can be enhanced by the judicious and careful application of appropriate heavy-metal tolerant,
plant growth promoting rhizobacteria including symbiotic nitrogen-fixing organisms. This review presents the results of studies
on the recent developments in the utilization of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria for direct application in soils contaminated
with heavy metals under a wide range of agro-ecological conditions with a view to restore contaminated soils and consequently,
promote crop productivity in metal-polluted soils across the globe and their significance in phytoremediation. 相似文献
